History & Mission

History

The Vintage Theater entered its official planning stages in May of 2008 by local high school student Conor O’Brien. Over the summer of 2008 major fund raising and planning went underway.

Through the support of family, friends, and members of the community, The Vintage Theater held its grand opening on January 16th, 17th, and 18th 2009 with a screening of the classic Alfred Hitchcock “The 39 Steps” at its original location of 222 Wyoming Av. in downtown Scranton!

Co-founded with Barbara O’Brien, The Vintage Theater became a popular destination. It was eight months later when chance brought The Vintage Theater together with Andrea Scahill and Theresa O’Connor. The Vintage Theater  joined forces with the two new dedicated young women and relocated the theater to a large and more accommodating space – this time at 119 Penn Av. (still in downtown Scranton). In addition to the enhanced venue the theater also houses a cafe within the theater itself! The cafe opened the first weekend of November and operates Monday – Saturday 6:00 to midnight/ and during all events. Since the theater opened its doors at 119 Penn Av., Steve Zampano (a young sound engineer and member of local band Awkward Silence) offered his services to better the technical aspects of the theater and cafe! Steve Zampano (serving as theaters head technical director and resident sound engineer) is co-operator of 119 Productions which will also double as a fully fuctional recording studio (scheduled to open in summer of 2010).

The Vintage Theater & Cafe has proved to be a vital element in Scranton’s art scene and revival!

Mission

The Vintage Theater is dedicated to the cultivation and showcase of both the visual and performing arts in the greater Scranton area. It is our firm belief that the arts are more than recreation, they are necessary for any city to thrive. We strive to stimulate the creativity and the economy of the community with both our charitable fundraising and support of regional artist and performers.
